The history of Moissanite should dates to 1893 when it was found in an impact crater in Diablo Canyon, Arizona by Henri Moissan, who is a French chemist. He mistakenly thought they were diamonds because of their similar appearance and hardness. Both gemstones have a striking gloss, almost colorless, glassy appearance.
Until 1904 that chemists discovered that he was wrong. He realized that the new crystals, unlike diamonds, were made of silicon carbide. Henri Moissan went on to win a Nobel Prize of this domain, and the stone's name is made by his name we call it Moissanite.
Moissanite reborn in the lab
Because of the rare this gemstone, it has not previously been used in jewelry. However, for some people to discover the beauty and splendor of this stone cannot be overlooked.
In the 1980s, a company called CREE started working on the process that would allow them to cultivate the stone in an artificial way.
Until 1995, most of these crystals were too large to be used in jewelry. Around that time, a team of diamond cutters, two scientists Charles and Colvard from the Cree River, began investigating how to bring the beauty of the Moissanite to the world of jewelry. Since then, the gemstone has become a popular alternative to diamond radiation at a fraction of the cost. There are now several different colored stones to choose from, ranging from completely colorless to yellowish-brown tones, depending on the choice for the quality of the jewelry.
The overall timeline of Moissanite
The semiconductor industry has been producing silicon carbide since the 1980s, at that time no one in the jewelry industry could have predicted these same silicon carbide gemstones would appear with a colorless quality.
Charles & Colvard was founded in 1995 and first introduced Moissanite jewelry in the late 1990s.
In 1998, the company received a patent to produce artificial silicon carbide (" SiC ") gems.
Forever Classic is the only rating available in the color range from I-J-K of Moissanite.
In 2012, A more transparent form of Moissanite was developed by Charles and Colvard called Forever Brilliant. Forever Brilliant's diamonds are comparable to G-H color. Finally, in 2015, the company released "Forever One," the best clarity of Moissanite.
