What is Moissanite?

Moissanite, the chemical name is synthetic silicon carbide, its appearance and diamond similar, with at least 10 times the magnifying glass to observe its contents to identify. Moissanite is a natural mineral found in impact craters that has been on Earth for 50,000 years. Its chemical composition is Sic, nearly colorless, refractive index 2.56-2.69, dispersion 0.104, birefringence index 0.043, hardness 9.25, density 3.22 g/cm3.

In 1893, Dr. Henri Moissan, a Nobel Prize-winning French chemist, discovered these glowing fragments of silicon carbide in the Diablo Canyon. In 1905, the new gemstone was named after the Moissan as an international honor for Henrimoissan's contribution to the scientific research of the Moissanite. As a result, natural Moissanite stones are rare and can only be found in extreme environments, such as meteorites, mantle rocks, and even inclusions in the diamond.

 

What is diamond?

 

Diamond is a kind of elemental crystal composed of carbon elements formed under the conditions of high pressure and high temperature at the depth of the earth. Diamond refers to the polished diamond. Diamond is a colorless regular octahedral crystal, which is divided into pure carbon, which is linked by carbon atoms with four valence bonds, and is the hardest substance known to exist naturally. Because the C-C bond in diamond is very strong, all the valence electrons are involved in the formation of covalent bond, there is no free electron, so diamond hardness is very high, melting point at 6900 degrees Fahrenheit, diamond in pure oxygen ignition point of 720~800℃, 850~1000℃ in the air, and does not conduct electricity.

Diamonds are separate by natural diamonds and artificial diamonds. Natural diamonds are natural gems formed by carbon elements under special high temperature and high pressure after years of precipitation. Artificial diamonds are artificially cultivated in a short period of time by simulating the formation environment of diamonds, but their main elements are carbon C. Most of Moissanite are synthetic and the component, is SiC, of silicon carbide. No matter be natural diamond, artificial diamond, or Moissanite, which is very hard to distinguish after polishing processing.

 

Properties and characteristics between diamond and Moissanite

  1. Moissanite’s brilliance is more than 2.5 times of the diamond brilliance, with white light directly shot at the stone, you can see the difference between these two gemstones, the same quality of diamonds and Moissanite, Moissanite’s brilliance is stronger than the diamond.
  2. Components are different, diamond is carbon element C, Moissanite is silicon carbide SiC, which from the outside or with the test drill pen is impossible to distinguish.
  3. The hardness of a diamond is 10. The hardness of a Moissanite is about 9.25. You can use them to cut the glass, and the diamond won’t be damaged, although the hardness is high, both are afraid of violent falls and collisions.
  4. Different densities, measured with diiodide methane (density 3.32 g/cm^3) solution, the Moissanite rises and the diamond sinks. If the Moissanite is cut according to the standard diamond size of 1 carat, the actual weight will be less than 1 carat.
  5. Refractive index is different, with 10 times magnifying glass, diamond due to high hardness, after grinding the facet will be extremely smooth, and the facet and facet between the edges of the contact is very sharp. Ordinary Moissanite, although the hardness is also high, faceted edges are not as sharp as diamonds. But the Belgian Magic Star Diamond uses a special cutting, zooming in to see the facet and facet between the angular contact is also very sharp, not much different from the diamond.
  6. Different inclusions. Under the magnifying glass, diamond inclusions are mostly cloud or point inclusions, and rarely needle-like. The inclusions of Moissanite are mostly columnar and lamellar.
  7. Fire, diamond burning in 2000°C pure oxygen, will directly sublimate without impurities, Moissanite will have a slight yellow situation, but after cooling it will return to original state.

Moissanite is a natural gem because of its limited quantity which can’t satisfy the market demand, most of Moissanite in the market is artificial cultivation, that’s the reason why the price can be lower than diamond.
